    అధికమాసం అంటే ఏమిటి?

      మనకి తెలిసిన మాసాలు 12. చైత్రమాసం మొదలుకొని ఫల్గుణ మాసం వరకు. మనకి

 

 

కాలగమనాలు రెండు రకాలు. మొదటిది సూర్య లేదా సౌరమానము, రెండవది  

చంద్రమానము లేదా  చాంద్రమానము. కానీ మనము చాంద్రమానాన్ని పరిగణలోకి 

తీసుకుంటాము. ఎందుకంటే ఈ 12  నెలలు అనేవి సూర్య గమనాన్ని బట్టి కాకుండా చంద్ర 

గమనాన్ని బట్టి ఏర్పడ్డాయి. ఎందుకంటే చిన్నప్పటి నుంచి మనం వింటున్నదే, 

చంద్రుడు భూమి చుట్టూ తిరగడానికి పట్టే సమయం  నెలరోజులు అని.

     ఇక్కడ నెల అంటే ఎన్ని రోజులు. చాంద్రమానంలో నెల అంటే 29 రోజులు ( సుమారు 

29.53 రోజులు ). నెలకి 29.53 రోజులు చొప్పున సంవత్సరానికి చూసుకుంటే 29.53×12=354.36 

( సుమారు 354) రోజులు. చాంద్రమానం ప్రకారం సంవత్సరానికి రోజులు 354. కానీ 

సౌరమానం ప్రకారం సంవత్సరానికి రోజులు 365. అంటే మిగిలిపోయిన రోజులు ఎన్ని 11. 

ఇప్పుడు ఈ రెండు మానాలలో ఉన్న రోజులను సమానం చేయాలంటే చాంద్రమానంలో 

ఉన్న 354 రోజులకు మిగిలిన 11 రోజులు కలపాలి. ఆ మిగిలిన 11 రోజులను ఏ విధంగా 

కలపాలి అన్నది ప్రశ్న. మనకి వారానికి 7 రోజులు, నెలకు 29.53 రోజులు అంటే ఈ 11 

రోజులని ఒక కొత్త వారంగా గాని, నెలగా గాని కలపడం కష్టం. 

అందుకని ఒక సంవత్సరానికి 11 రోజులు చొప్పున 3 సంవత్సరాలకు (అంటే సుమారు 32.5 

నెలలకు) తీసుకుంటే చాంద్రమాన సంవత్సరం సౌరమాన సంవత్సరం కంటే 30 రోజులు 

తక్కువ. అందుకని మిగిలిన 30 రోజులను ఉన్న 12 మాసాలతో పాటు అధికంగా ఒక నెలగా 

పరిగణించారు. అదే అధికమాసం. 

     మనం గమనిస్తే ప్రతి మూడేళ్లకు( సుమారు 32.5 నెలలకు ) ఒకసారి ఒక అధికమాసం 

వస్తుంది.  ఇలా అధికమాసం కలపడం ద్వారా రెండు మానాలలో ( సౌర మరియు చాంద్ర ) 

ఉన్న రోజులని సరి చేయడం జరుగుతుంది.

What is an Adhika Masam (Leap Month)?

We know that there are 12 months in the Hindu calendar, starting from Chaitra Masam and ending with Phalguna Masam.

There are two types of time calculations followed in our tradition:

1. Solar calendar (Soura Maanam)
2. Lunar calendar (Chandra Maanam)

However, we mainly follow the lunar calendar, because these 12 months are determined based on the movement of the Moon rather than the movement of the Sun.

From childhood, we learn that the Moon takes about one month to revolve around the Earth.

Now, how many days are there in a lunar month?

In the lunar calendar, one month is approximately 29.53 days.
So, for 12 months:

$29.53\times 12=354.36$

That means a lunar year has about 354 days.

But according to the solar calendar, a year has 365 days.

So the difference between the two calendars is:

$365-354=11$

That means the lunar year is shorter by about 11 days.

The question then is: how do we adjust these extra 11 days?

We cannot easily add them as a separate week or month because:

• A week has only 7 days
• A lunar month is about 29.53 days

Therefore, instead of adjusting every year, the difference is accumulated over about 3 years (approximately 32.5 months).

After 3 years:

$11\times 3\approx 30$

The lunar calendar falls behind the solar calendar by nearly 30 days, which is approximately equal to one lunar month.

So, an extra month is added to the regular 12 months. This additional month is called Adhika Masam (Leap Month).

If we observe carefully, an Adhika Masam occurs roughly once every three years (about every 32.5 months).

By adding this extra month, the difference between the solar calendar and the lunar calendar is balanced.
