భక్తి అంటే ఏమిటి?

భక్తి ఒక అనిర్వచనీయమైన తన్మయత్వం. భక్తి గురించి ఎంత చెప్పినా తక్కువే. రాముడిని తీసుకుంటే, ఆంజనేయుడి సేవలో భక్తి వుంది, సుగ్రీవుడి స్నేహంలో భక్తి వుంది,

విభీషణుడి శరణాగతిలో భక్తి వుంది, శబరి ఆదరణ లో భక్తి వుంది, రాముని కోసం భార్యని,

సంపదని, సంసారాన్ని వదిలి 14 సంవత్సరాలు అరణ్యాలకి సిద్ధమైన లక్ష్మణుడి త్యాగంలో భక్తి

వుంది, అఖండ సామ్రాజ్యాన్ని, సంపదని తృణప్రాయంగా భావించి రాముని పాదుకలని సేవించిన

భరతుని ఆత్మ నివేదనలో భక్తి వుంది, రామదాసు కీర్తనలో భక్తి వుంది, ఆఖరికి రావణుడి

శత్రుత్వంలో కూడా భక్తి వుంది (వైర భక్తి ). ఆలా అని ఇప్పుడు దేవుడిని ద్వేషించమని చెప్పటం

లేదు. రావణుడు అలా ఉండటంలో ఒక కారణం వుంది. అది అతనికి శాపం. దాని గురించి నేను

తదుపరి వచ్చే శీర్షికలలో విశదీకరిస్తాను. వీరంతా రామునికి ఎందుకు భక్తులయ్యారో అది కూడా

నేను తర్వాత వివరిస్తాను .

భక్తి ఎక్కడినుంచి పుడుతుంది అంటే ధర్మం నుంచి. ఎవరైతే ధర్మాన్ని

అనుసరిస్తారో వారివెంటే దైవం ఉంటుంది.

ఉదాహరణకు మహా భారతంలో పాండవులని తీసుకుంటే, సినిమాలలో చూపినట్లు

పాండవులు కృష్ణుడిని పూజించలేదు. కానీ వారు కృష్ణుడిని నమ్మారు. కృష్ణుడిని అనుసరించారు.

కృష్ణుడు చెప్పిన మార్గంలో వెళ్లారు. పాండవులు ధర్మాన్ని ఆచరించారు. ఎన్ని కష్టాలు ఎదురైనా

వాళ్ళు ధర్మాన్ని వదల్లేదు. అందుకే పిలవకపోయినా కృష్ణుడు వారి వెంట ఉన్నాడు.

అంటే దీనిని బట్టి మనకు అర్థమైంది ఏమిటి? భక్తి అంటే పూజించడం ఒక్కటే కాదు

భగవంతునికి నచ్చిన విధంగా మనం ఉండాలి. భగవంతుడు చెప్పిన మార్గంలో మనం వెళ్ళాలి

ఆ మార్గమే ధర్మం. కాబట్టి భక్తి అంటే భగవంతుడిని అనుసరించడం.

ఈ భక్తి అనేది చాలా రకాలు. ఇప్పుడు ఒక చిన్న కథ ద్వారా భక్తి యొక్క ఇంకొక రూపాన్ని

చూద్దాం.

పూర్వం కేరళలో ఒక కృష్ణుడి భక్తురాలు పూలు అమ్ముకుని జీవిస్తూ ఉండేది. వివాహమైన

కొంతకాలానికి ఆమె భర్త చనిపోయారు. పిల్లలు కూడా లేరు. కానీ ఆమె బాధపడలేదు. ఎందుకంటే

జీవితంలో ఏం జరిగినా అది దైవ సంకల్పం గానే భావించింది. ఆమెకి కృష్ణుడు అంటే ఎంత భక్తి

అంటే కృష్ణుడిని తన కొడుకుగా భావించేది. ఎవరు ఏమి అడిగినా నా కొడుకు కృష్ణుని అడగాలి అని

అంటూ ఉండేది. అది విని అందరూ ఆమెకు పిచ్చి అనుకున్నారు. పిచ్చిదాన్ని లాగానే చూశారు.

ఒకరోజు ఆమె చనిపోయింది. ఆమె అనాధ కాబట్టి ఆమెకు అంత్యక్రియలు జరపడానికి ఎవరు

కూడా ముందుకు రాలేదు. అనాధలకు అంత్యక్రియలు చేసే సంఘానికి అప్పగిద్దామని ఊరంతా

అనుకున్నారు. కానీ అప్పుడే ఆమె ఇంట్లో నుండి పరుగు పరుగున ఒక చిన్న పిల్లవాడు వచ్చి ఆమె

అనాధ కాదు నేను ఆమె కొడుకుని ఆమె అంత్యక్రియలు మొత్తం నేనే నిర్వహిస్తాను అని చెప్పి

అంత్యక్రియలు నిర్వహించడమే కాకుండా 12 రోజుల కార్యక్రమాలు కూడా ఘనంగా

నిర్వహించాడు.12వ రోజు కార్యక్రమం అయిపోయిన తర్వాత ఆ పిల్లవాడు అందరి ముందే

అంతర్ధానమయ్యాడు. ఊహ తెలిసినప్పటి నుంచి కృష్ణుడిని తన కొడుకు కొడుకు అన్నందుకు

స్వయంగా కృష్ణుడే కొడుకుగా వచ్చి ఆమె అంత్య క్రియలు నిర్వహించాడు. ఊరందరికీ అప్పటికి

గానీ అర్థం కాలేదు ఆమెది పిచ్చి కాదు భక్తి అని. ఆమె కృష్ణుడిని తన కొడుకుగా నమ్మింది. అందుకే

కృష్ణుడు కొడుకై వచ్చాడు

భగవంతుని తమ సొంత వారిగా భావించడం కూడా భక్తే. భక్తి అనేది నమ్మకంతో కూడింది.

నిజంగా మనకే గనక భక్తి ఉంటే మనం కొలిచే దైవం మన పక్కనే ఉన్నాడు మనం ఏం చేస్తున్నా

చూస్తున్నాడు ఏ ఆలోచన చేసిన గమనిస్తున్నాడు అనే నమ్మకం ఉండాలి . అప్పుడూ మనం ఏ

తప్పు చేయము. అంటే భగవంతుడు ఎప్పుడూ మన పక్కనే ఉన్నాడు మనల్ని చూస్తున్నాడు

అన్న నమ్మకమే భక్తి.

Simple గా చెప్పాలంటే ఒక వ్యక్తి మనకి నచ్చి ఏం జరిగినా మనకి తోడుగా ఉంటాడు

ధైర్యాన్ని నింపుతాడు, మనకి దారి చూపిస్తాడు అని నమ్మడమే ఆ వ్యక్తి మీద మనకున్న నమ్మకం.

ఆ వ్యక్తి భగవంతుడు అయితే ఆ నమ్మకమే భక్తి.

What is Devotion (Bhakti)?

Devotion is an indescribable state of complete absorption and surrender. No matter how much one speaks about devotion, it still feels incomplete.

If we take the example of Rama:

There is devotion in Hanuman’s service.
There is devotion in Sugriva’s friendship.
There is devotion in Vibhishana’s surrender.
There is devotion in Shabari’s hospitality.
There is devotion in Lakshmana’s sacrifice, who was ready to leave behind his wife, wealth, and worldly life to accompany Rama into the forest for fourteen years.
There is devotion in Bharata’s selfless dedication, who considered an entire kingdom insignificant and instead worshipped Rama’s sandals.
There is devotion in Ramadasu’s hymns.
Even Ravana’s enmity towards Rama contained devotion — known as “Vaira Bhakti” (devotion through opposition).

That does not mean one should hate God today. Ravana had his own reason and destiny behind such devotion, which I will explain in future topics. I will also explain later why all these people became devotees of Rama.

Devotion arises from Dharma (righteousness). Wherever Dharma is followed, divinity resides.

For example, if we take the Pandavas from the Mahabharata, unlike how movies often portray, the Pandavas did not merely worship Krishna. They trusted Him. They followed Him. They walked on the path He showed them. Despite countless hardships, they never abandoned Dharma. That is why Krishna stood by them even without being called.

So what do we understand from this?
Devotion is not merely performing rituals or worship. We must live in a way that pleases God. We must walk on the path shown by Him — and that path is Dharma.

Therefore, devotion means following God.

Devotion has many forms. Now let us look at another form of devotion through a small story.

Long ago in Kerala, there lived a woman devoted to Krishna who earned her livelihood by selling flowers. A few years after marriage, her husband passed away. She had no children either. Yet she did not grieve, because she believed that everything happening in life was God’s will.

Her devotion towards Krishna was so deep that she considered Krishna to be her own son. Whenever anyone asked her for anything, she would say, “Ask my son Krishna.” Hearing this, people thought she was mad and treated her like a lunatic.

One day, she passed away. Since she had no family, no one came forward to perform her funeral rites. The villagers decided to hand over her body to an organization that conducted last rites for the abandoned.

At that moment, a small boy suddenly came running out of her house and declared, “She is not an orphan. I am her son, and I will perform all her final rites.” Not only did he conduct the funeral, but he also performed all the twelve-day rituals grandly.

After the ceremony on the twelfth day, the boy disappeared before everyone’s eyes.

Only then did the villagers realize the truth. Since childhood, the woman had believed Krishna to be her son with complete faith. Therefore, Krishna Himself came in the form of a son to perform her final rites.

Only then did the villagers understand — it was not madness; it was devotion.

Considering God as one’s own family is also devotion. Devotion is built on faith. If we truly possess devotion, we must believe that the deity we worship is always beside us, watching everything we do and observing every thought we have. Then we would never commit wrong actions.

That faith — that God is always with us and watching over us — is devotion.

Simply put, when we believe that a person we love will stand by us no matter what happens, give us courage, and guide us through life, that trust is our faith in that person.
If that person is God, then that faith is called devotion.
